Exploring Green Spaces
Green Spaces and Imprints started as an effort to document the experience of visiting the Biodiversity Park in Gurgaon. The illustrations seek not only to interpret what is seen through eyes, but also, what is felt through touch. The print-making method of frottages, retains the physicality of the space, adding another dimension and depth to the artwork. Hence, the illustration does not only become the representation of the space, but it’s extension, preserving its tactile memory. Furthermore, making the work available as a set of artist zines and postcards, increases its accessibility and portability. I believe it could function like a souvenir of that park, becoming a collectible.
Note on the Process
The illustration involved elaborate analogue processes like taking frottages of the barks, leaves and surfaces in the garden with oil pastels, painting acrylics over them, cutting and collaging them to create visuals in the scene. This method of image fabrication builds on the large paper-cut murals by Matisse, who also influenced the children’s book illustrator Eric Carle, known for creating collages from paint-textured tissue paper.
